Transurethral resection of a bladder tumor is usually your first treatment for early bladder cancer.

The surgeon removes the tumor in your bladder through the urethra.

The urethra is the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body.

You may have transurethral resection of a bladder tumor to remove early bladder cancer: during a cystoscopy test if your doctor sees a lump or after tests that show a tumor in the bladder

The ablation is usually under general anesthesia. This process takes between 15 to 90 minutes.

And now we will deal in some detail with everything that you will go through, when you choose to perform the operation, starting with the preparation phase and the examinations through the operation and post-operation phase and ending with the recovery and recovery phase ..

How is the process of eradicating bladder cancer?

  • The surgeon places a thin, hard tube called a cystoscope into the urethra. The cystoscope has fibers inside it and a light, camera and sample at one end. The surgeon can look through the lens or see pictures on the TV screen.
  • The surgeon passes small tools under the cystoscope to cut out any tumors from the lining of the bladder.
  • Usually you can go home the same day of the operation. But sometimes you have to stay for a few days.

1- Preparing for a bladder cancer excision:

  • Preparation for bladder cancer excision begins one or two weeks before surgery. They will take some measurements (weight, temperature, heart rate, breathing, oxygen levels, and blood pressure.
  • You may have a blood test, a chest X-ray, and an EKG. This is normal for all operations performed under general anesthesia.
  • The doctor gives you instructions about the procedure and what to bring for the day. They will also let you know when to stop eating or drinking.
  • For general anesthesia, you should usually stop eating at least 6 hours beforehand. And you can drink sips of water two hours before.

2- Before bladder cancer eradication:

  • On the day of your surgery, you will see a surgeon who will explain the procedure to you and ask you to sign a consent form. This is the time to ask any questions.
  • You will also meet with an anesthesiologist, who will help you fall asleep and look after you while you sleep.
  • The nurse gives you a hospital gown to change it. So you need to remove all of your clothes.
  • The nurse takes you to the anesthesia room on a medical cart.
  • A small tube is usually inserted into a vein (cannula) before the anesthetic is given. This is so that they can give you the drugs directly into your vein. Most hospitals also give you an injection of antibiotics before the procedure.

3- During the bladder cancer eradication process:

  • Once you lose consciousness after anesthesia, the surgeon passes the cystoscope into the urethra.
  • Surgeons use a cystoscope to look at the inside of the bladder. They also pass small instruments under the cystoscope.
  • They use these tools to remove any tumors.
  • Then they use a probe to close the area to stop any bleeding.
There is an important part of this process called narrowband imaging.

Narrowband imaging during cystectomy:

The surgeon uses different colored lights (blue and green) to get a better look and understanding of your bladder. These lights can reach the layers of tissue deep in the bladder and can help reveal abnormal areas :

Photodynamic diagnostics (PDD)

The surgeon may place a dye in your bladder an hour before the procedure. The dye is sensitive to light. During surgery, they shine a blue light on the lining of the bladder. This is called photo-dynamic diagnosis (PDD).

Chemotherapy after bladder cancer resection can help show areas of cancer more clearly.

  • You will usually have a dose of chemotherapy in your bladder at the end of the operation. Or you may get it when you return to the ward. You will get it within 6 hours of performing the operation.
  •  This is to help prevent bladder cancer from returning and getting rid of any cancer cells that might have been left behind.

4- After bladder cancer eradication:

It includes the care phase as well as the hospitalization.

  • After leaving the operation, you will go to your hospital room for recovery. Your nurse watches you and takes regular measurements until you wake up properly from the anesthesia
  • Then you can eat and drink normally.
  • You may have a tube in your bladder (catheter) to drain urine into a bag for a short time. The nurse removes it before you get home.
  • You may see blood in your urine. This may last for up to 3 days. This does not mean that you cannot go home.
  • You may notice some bleeding 10 to 14 days after the operation. Don’t worry about this it can be natural.
  • Drink plenty of water but if it doesn’t stop within 24 hours, contact your doctor.
  • Your doctor will ask you to drink plenty of fluids. This helps protect you from contracting infections.
  • When you first start urinating, it may burn and sting for several days. You will be given pain relievers to help make this more comfortable.
